In practice using Google maps on iPhone works better for directions. It reliably send notifications on turns to pebble and when you need to take a look at the map you actually can see a working picture of the map.
The app is more like a (poorly) working tech demo than really meant to be used.
If you want to pretend to have a map on your pebble, you can try the app as long as you do not expect it to work in real life.
